Spring wildflowers are wonderful at this time of the year and continuously change as early bloomers fade and later bloomers take their place. I have joined other wildflower hikes and led some of my own during the past week.

The best display has been along the Devil’s Staircase Segment of the Ice Age Trail at the north end of Riverside Park in Janesville. I hiked there with five other weekly walkers on Tuesday morning.

Except for marsh marigold, all of the spring wildflowers we have seen on all of our walks were seen there, and then some. The trail is along a beautiful hundred foot sandstone cliff along the Rock River. The entire hillside is peppered with a mixture of beautiful wildflowers.

Another favorite spot for wildflowers is at a couple small wet woods in Prince’s Point State Wildlife Area. north of Whiewater.

Cold weather was with us on Tuesday and I had to wear gear that covered my ears and hands. Seven of us hiked the Ice Age Trail from U.S. Highway 12 south to the power lines for our regular Tuesday walk.

Norwin Watson took over my walk the next day. It warmed up and the sun came out drawing 33 to walk the trails.

Along the trails, the group met up with a group from Northland College in Ashland who were enjoying the wildflowers on the Ice Age Trail and camping out at Ottawa Lake Campgrounds. Birds-foot violets highlighted the flowers seen this day.

Happy trekking, Russ
