Cancer patient forced to choose between rent, health insurance
Editor's note: The Time is Now to Help was founded by a local businessman who knew extreme poverty as a child. With the help of donations from the community, The Time is Now is able to help local residents in need.
Dear W.C.,
I am a middle aged woman going through treatment for cancer. I have not been able to work for the past two months due to the chemo and radiation treatments.
I have not been able to pay my rent or utilities. I have been paying my health insurance, because if I am dropped I, will never be able to get insurance again. I am divorced, I have no children, and both of my parents died several years ago. I am on my own with no one else to turn to. Please help me.
A desperate woman
Dear readers,
I called the letter writer and listened as she poured out all she had been going through.
It seemed as though she really needed someone to talk to. She went from running an active business to a life filled with sickness and weakness. She was not prepared for the doctor's diagnosis or the subsequent treatment.
When I arrived for a visit, I knocked on the door and heard a faint voice tell me, "Come in, the door is open." I walked into a very small rental above a garage. There was a steep flight of stairs and I knew it must be terrible for someone so weak. When I walked in the dimly lit room, I could see a frail individual lying on a worn couch. She was gaunt and pale.
She spoke about her life before the cancer and her plans for the future.
We then talked about her life right now and what The Time Is Now could do to help.
Foremost on her mind was paying the rent to keep her apartment. The Time is Now paid her back rent and the next month's rent.
I talked to the landlord about a possible rent reduction and we were happy to tell her the landlord cut the rent in half. We also paid her utilities.
She was positive she would be finished with her chemo after one more treatment and ready to go back to work. We talked about the importance of proper nutrition and helped supply her with healthy foods. I promised to come by again after her last treatment to check on how she was doing.
When I arrived for our next visit, she actually had the strength to answer the door. She was still pale but seemed to have more energy due to the extra nutrition she was receiving. She was much more positive about the future. She spoke about her faith and where she was spiritually.
She said she had placed her life in God's hands. She prayed for help to get through her illness and believes The Time Is Now to Help was the answer to her prayers for financial help.
On my last visit to her apartment, I found she had returned to work. She was getting her strength back. She was very appreciative of what The Time Is Now and all of you, our supporters, had done to help her through the most difficult time of her life. Her prognosis for a complete recovery is good, and she is now making plans for her future.
Thank you for caring and sharing, Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C.
