Kiwanis club made history with nursing home
East Troy Manor, a 50-bed senior care facility, is located at the southeast corner of Wisconsin Highway 20 and County Highway E in East Troy. The nursing home was begun as a community project of the Kiwanis Club of Greater East Troy. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development agreed to provide $75,000 under a first mortgage if the community would be able to raise an additional $25,000. The Kiwanis did this by selling $550 IOUs. The facility opened Nov. 1, 1977. Linda Burie, social services coordinator, admitted the first resident. Burie is still on the job in that position. She indicated that in May 2010 the entrance area was remodeled to make it more welcoming to residents and visitors. On June 30, 1996, the Kiwanis paid off the last of these debentures. The group has now constructed a 50-unit independent living complex for the elderly, The Heritage, just to the east of the nursing home. It should be noted that for some time, this Kiwanis Club was the only one in the world that owned and operated a nursing home. The facility is now a part of Wisconsin Illinois Senior Housing Corp. It is still a nonprofit organization. The current administrator at East Troy is Debbie Benetti.
