Powell’s Antiques is located at 14 W. Geneva St. in Elkhorn. The shop dates back to 1945, after Elbert Powell went to an auction and bought a kerosene lamp.

He began to realize the variety of lamps that were available and soon had quite a collection.

He opened Powell’s Antiques in his garage. The next year, he put an addition on the building. He used some tiles and stained-glass windows to decorate the shop.

In Powell’s later years, his two sons, Howard and Allen, took over the business. They added to the building, and Howard, along with his wife Lois, ran the business.

At first, the shop only was open part-time. Later, they decided to open five days a week.

Powell’s Antiques still specializes in lamps. Howard Powell can convert oil lamps to electric, and change electric ones back to oil.

However, the shop also sells a wide variety of antiques, furniture, coins and glassware.
