Before Alder’s Dairy came to Delavan at 903 E. Geneva St., it had operated in Elkhorn, beginning in 1921. That company was known as Urbandale Dairy and was organized by Robert Alder Sr., and Dallas E. Davis.

The business was centered around a herd of 100 Guernsey cows on a 200-acre farm. As one of the first dairy operations to pasteurize its milk, the company established home delivery to patrons in Williams Bay, Elkhorn and Delavan.

Soon, the Alders became the sole operators of the business, and their three sons, Robert Jr., George and Ivan, joined them. In 1942, they teamed up with Dean Foods and in 1951 moved to Delavan.

Robert Sr. retired in 1957, and the operation continued under the sons. Robert Jr. retired in 1978, followed by Ivan’s retirement in 1994.

George, and his wife, Mary Gene, remained an important part of the operation until George’s retirement in 2006.

Their daughter, Debra Scherer then headed up the business.
