Rummage sale to raise money for tornado relief

By Dan Plutchak ( Contact )   May 9, 2011 - 10:07 a.m.

Walworth County's biggest Alabama Crimson Tide fans will be holding a rummage sale Saturday to raise money to aid tornado victims in Alabama.

Brigette Kutschma of Lake Geneva decided to organize the sale when her brother, Andy Weigel, the head strength and conditioning coach of the Alabama men's basketball team, asked her for help.

The multi-family sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 13 and Saturday May 14 at the Kutschma's home at N2239 Wilmot Blvd., Lake Geneva. MAP

Wilmot Boulevard is located off of South Street, between Badger High School and Lake Geneva Middle School.

The day the tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, April 27, her brother was huddled with about 200 people underneath the basketball court in the basement of Coleman Coliseum, Kutschma said.

He was safe, but Tuscaloosa was devastated.

Nearly 40 people died in Tuscaloosa alone, and more that 300 deaths were blamed on the storms that tore through the South.

"It's so sad what's happened down there," Kutschma said. "It's unbelievable."

Proceeds of the rummage sale will go to the Sweet Home Fund, which was launched by head men's Crimson Tide basketball coach Anthony Grant.

More than 10 families have contributed items for the sale.

Some specialty items include a hospital bed, double stroller, bar stools, children's toys, clothing and household items.

Kutschma's 4-year-old daughter, Marcella, will be holding a cupcake and lemonade sale.
