After saving her life, Elkhorn cyclist spreads the word about helmets
ELKHORN -- Terri Dellamaria of Elkhorn tells Rails to Trails Magazine that she doesn't remember the accident July 5, 2007 that nearly killed her.
A quiet ride along County Highway H near Elkhorn came to a horrific end when a distracted driver struck her at 50 mph and sent Dellamaria flying 62 feet. She was transported by helicopter to Milwaukee and treated for multiple injuries, including a severely broken leg, cracked vertebrae and ribs, and significant brain trauma.
The accident didn't end her passion for biking, but it did give her a new focus in teaching young people the importance of bike safety and wearing a helmet.
Dellamaria was profiled in this month's Rails to Trails Magazine, published by a inonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., whose mission is to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines
The mother of two and substitute teacher now works with the Elkhorn Police Department to share her story with students in kindergarten through 5th grades in the Elkhorn Area School District.
She talks with children about the importance of bike safety and wearing their helmets, showing them her "broken" bike that was hit, and the helmet that saved her life.

I knew Terri a few years back & she's such a kind, caring person. So it's fitting that she's helping others learn about something that's so important!! I was sorry to hear about her accident & relieved that she's doing so well!! Great job Terri!!

Very good story. As an avid road bike rider. The dangers are always in the back of my mind. I do find for the most part the cars are respectful to the bikers on the road. It only takes one that is distracted.... glad she made a full recovery and still enjoys the sport.
