— Brodhead school officials hope to name a new head football coach, athletic director and tech ed teacher in the coming weeks, Superintendent Chuck Deery said.

The vacancies were created last week when the board named Jim Matthys the new high school principal, effective July 1. He will take over for Leonard Lueck, who will become the next Brodhead superintendent when Deery retires this summer.

The district is working on possible administrative restructuring to fill the athletic director position, and “several different ideas” are being floated to fill the coaching position, Deery said.

The school board hopes to have a decision on the athletic director position by its next meeting June 12, he said. Deery said he wasn’t sure whether a coach candidate would be ready by then.

Matthys was an unanimous choice among a pool of 28 candidates for principal. Milton Middle School teacher Tara Czerwinski was the other finalist in a second round of interviews, Deery said.

Matthys has been the Brodhead-Juda football coach for eight seasons.

The Cardinals qualified for the WIAA playoffs in each of Matthys’ eight seasons, extending the team’s playoff streak to 21 seasons.

He compiled a 69-26 record in his eight seasons.
