— The male driver and a female passenger in a military vehicle that hung off an Interstate 90/39 overpass have been transported to a Janesville hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Janesville Fire Department.

Emergency workers transported the two patients to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center today after an accident involving a semitrailer and the military vehicle on eastbound I-90/39 at the Milton Avenue overpass, Janesville Fire Cpt. Scott Running said.

The driver was out of the vehicle when emergency responders arrived, Running said. The passenger either was able to get out on her own or with assistance. Running wasn't sure whether she had to climb down from the overpass or back up onto the interstate.

The semitrailer driver refused hospital treatment, Running said.

Crews have removed the military vehicle, described as an eight-wheel towing vehicle, from hanging off the side of the bridge over northbound Milton Avenue.

The military vehicle appears to have impacted and broke the railing of the bridge, spilling chunks of concrete onto Milton Avenue. The entire cab of the vehicle was projecting off the west side of the southbound lane. The vehicle was not hanging over the Milton Avenue roadway but was hanging over the slope going up to the bridge.

The left front wheel was ripped off and tossed over the bridge, a Gazette photographer said.

A semitrailer sitting across the lanes of traffic just south of the overpass has two puncture holes through the trailer. A sign on the trailer stated “Southwark Metal Manufacturing Co.,” and the door of the cab stated it was from Indianapolis.

Numerous military personnel and emergency responders were standing around the area.

The left lane of eastbound interstate traffic is now open, though the right lane remains closed. The westbound lanes remain open. Traffic was being diverted off the interstate at the Milton Avenue exit. Authorities allowed traffic stuck between the exit and the overpass to travel through the accident scene.

The accident was affecting traffic as far north as Newville, where the Wisconsin State Patrol blocked the southbound entrance ramp from Highway 59 onto I-90/39, a driver in the area said. The State Patrol's alternate route was to exit the southbound interstate at mile marker 163 to Highway 59 westbound to Highway 51 southbound, then back to the interstate.

Officials advised drivers on Milton Avenue to avoid the area. Northbound traffic on Milton Avenue was down to one lane, though southbound traffic was open.

The accident was reported at 11:11 a.m.
