BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Retired Beloit Daily News editor and publisher William D. Behling (BAY'-ling) has died after a brief illness. He was 84.

The Beloit Daily News says Behling died Tuesday night at his home in Roscoe, Ill.

A longtime Beloit civic leader, Behling started as a reporter and photographer at the Beloit Daily News after graduating from high school in 1946. He rose through the ranks of state editor, city editor, managing editor and chief editorial writer before being named executive editor. In 1972 he was appointed top executive at the Rhinelander Daily News.

Behling returned to Beloit in 1979 to become editor and publisher, a job he held until his retirement in 1994. After retiring he continued to research and write the paper's "On This Date" column.
