— Roughly 80 area fire departments continued their battle early Thursday to extinguish an eight-alarm fire at a food plant in Burlington.

The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. Wednesday at Echo Lake Farm Produce.

Burlington Mayor Bob Miller told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel early Thursday that no employees or firefighters had been injured in the fire at the 70,000-square-foot building near downtown Burlington. He said the fire still was not under control.

The Journal Times reports some residents in nearby homes are being evacuated because of heavy smoke. A spokesman for Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington says the hospital is treating a couple of walk-in patients for smoke inhalation.

Burlington Mayor Robert Miller told WISN 12 News that about 80 homes in the area were evacuated, but no more evacuations were expected.

The Red Cross of Southeast Wisconsin announced on Twitter that their team has been called to Burlington to open a reception center for evacuated residents.

Firefighters from Burlington and other area departments were called to the scene. Area crews include Clinton, Milton, Janesville, Beloit, Evanesville and Edgerton.
