— Co-chairs of the Legislature's Audit Committee have scheduled a public hearing for next week to gather more information about $33 million in overpayments made by the University of Wisconsin System.

A recent audit uncovered the overpayments made to health insurance premiums and pensions.

Republican Sen. Rob Cowles and Republican Rep. Samantha Kerkman said Tuesday they scheduled a hearing for Jan. 22 to discuss another possible audit of the UW's payroll and benefit processing, including its new Human Resource System.

UW President Kevin Reilly has promised to hire an independent auditor to figure out what went wrong.

Cowles says in a statement that the overpayments are a "major problem" within the UW System. Kerkman says UW should be held accountable for problems with its human resource system.
