Hunger Task Force to get milk from shuttered plant
MILWAUKEE — Milk from the shuttered Golden Guernsey plant in Waukesha will be distributed to the needy throughout the state.
The 83-year-old dairy processor closed abruptly Jan. 5, leaving more than 100 people without jobs and making schools scramble to line up new milk suppliers.
The Los Angeles private equity firm that bought Golden Guernsey in 2011, OpenGate Capital, sought Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court.
The products were donated to Milwaukee-based Hunger Task Force. Spokeswoman Dana Hartenstein said Tuesday they are still trying to determine exactly how much milk and other products like cottage cheese and yogurt is still fresh, but there will be enough for outside the Milwaukee area.
Officials hope to get help from trucking companies for deliveries in Madison, Eau Claire, La Crosse and Green Bay.
