— Whitewater Emergency Management is hosting an Amateur Radio Relay League's "Kids Day" this Sunday.

The day is an on-air event to encourage young people (licensed or not) to have fun with amateur radio. It's designed to give on-the-air experience to youngsters and foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older ham radio operators a chance to share their station and love for amateur radio with children.

Besides achieving their first radio contact with another radio operator, children, parents and anyone interested will have access to information and literature on ham radio, Morse code, severe weather spotting, preparing for severe weather and the National Weather Service.

Radio contacts will be provided by the Jefferson County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (JefCares). JefCares will also have their communications trailer on site for viewing, and demonstration of amateur radio TV.

Local amateur radio operators will provide live Morse code demonstrations.

A tornado spotter from Whitewater's severe weather spotters will answer questions from kids of all ages.

Milwaukee Area Skywarn Association is providing educational literature, and a representative to help answer questions.

When: Sun., Jan. 1, noon until 6 p.m.

Where: Cravath Park Lakeside Pavilion, 341 S. Fremont St., Whitewater
