— The Milton School District has tapped a principal and a superintendent from two different districts as finalists for the superintendent position vacated when Mike Garrow resigned last year.

School board member Betsy Lubke said the district will move forward this week with a second and final round of interviews with candidates Jeffrey Jacobson, a high school principal in Platteville, and Dean Sanders, superintendent of the Lake Mills Area School District.

The winning candidate will fill the position left vacant when Garrow resigned after investigations into his public conduct and his use of district computer equipment.

Jacobson and Sanders were chosen from a field of six semifinalists that included two Milton School District employees: District Curriculum Director Randy Bartels and Milton Middle School Principal Tim Schigur.

The field was trimmed down after the first round of interviews Saturday as the six candidates answered questions from district administrators and staff, school district residents and a panel of board members, Lubke said. The questions regarded expertise in the area of school finance, curriculum development, public relations, communication and technology, Lubke said.

Lubke said Jacobson and Sandersí experiences and personal qualities were the closest match to those sets of priorities.

Lubke said the next and final step in the selection process would come this week. Candidate interview and focus groups will conduct a final interview along with tours of Milton and the school districtís buildings with Sanders on Wednesday. The group then will repeat the process Thursday with Jacobson.

After those sessions, the district will hold public forums Thursday and Friday with either candidate at the district central office. At that time, residents will have a chance to meet the candidates and ask more questions.

Lubke said the board could offer the job to a winning candidate by the first week of May.
