Write-in candidate defeats incumbent in Elkhorn Common Council race
ELKHORN In a race that saw no names listed on the ballot, write-in voters from Elkhorn’s 1st District elected Hoss Rehberg to replace incumbent Jerry Anderson on Tuesday.
Anderson had represented the district on Elkhorn’s Common Council for the past two years, but he filed for non-candidacy in this election amid concerns he did not have enough time for the job.
Seeing that Anderson was not running, Rehberg joined the race after the deadline to get his name on the ballot and became a write-in candidate.
A couple of weeks later, Anderson worked out the conflict and decided he would, in fact, run for re-election.
That set the stage for a write-in contest between the two men.
For Rehberg, that meant going door to door before Election Day, handing out fliers and putting up posters so people knew his name. He won by 25 votes.
“It made (the race) challenging,” Rehberg said. “It came down to getting the word out, for both of us.”
Rehberg said his first priority will be to talk with other council members and residents about their concerns, approaching the job with “a very open mind and open ears.”
