DARIEN TOWNSHIP--On Saturday, Sept. 22, S.M.I.L.E.S. (Special Methods in Learning Equine Skills) will host its student horse show. The public is invited to watch during the Superstar Horse Show, as the S.M.I.L.E.S. students put everything they’ve learned on display.
The therapeutic riding center, located in Darien Township, provides a stimulating atmosphere that motivates individuals with special needs, of all ages, to enthusiastically participate in activities that build strong bodies and strong characters. These activities are built around the S.M.I.L.E.S. horses, however both mounted and unmounted activities work together to support the client’s functional goals and positively influence each participant’s life.
The Superstar Horse Show is opportunity to showcase the talents and accomplishments of the riders. Visitors also will be able to tour the S.M.I.L.E.S. facility, with tours of the barn, sensory garden and sensory riding trail.
Festivities begin at 9 a.m. with an opening flag ceremony. Participants then will show in several classes, highlighting the gains they have made through therapeutic riding. Of course, the show will include judging and the awarding of trophies.
The event also is a fundraiser for S.M.I.L.E.S. Each participant in the show has collected a minimum of $75 in pledges toward the ridership/ scholarship fund to earn a seat in the show. Attendance is open to the public and admission is free.
