Milton High School is becoming a fixture at the girls state golf tournament.

The Red Hawks qualified for the Division 1 state tournament for the third straight year by winning the Badger Sectional on Monday. The state tournament will be held next Monday and Tuesday at the Cherokee Country Club in Madison.

Milton finished with a 331 total, three shots better than Kettle Moraine.

Janesville Parker came up short in its bid to qualify as a team with a 367 total, but junior Taylor Wyss finished third overall with a 78 to advance as one of three additional individual qualifiers. Emily Joers of Waukesha, the medalist Monday with a 75, and Mukwonago's Abby Martin (81) were the other two individual qualifiers.

Milton got consistent play from its top four golfers in punching its state tournament ticket. Senior Laura Stair and sophomore Maddie McCue each shot 79, Stephanie Stair had an 85 and CheyAnn Knudsen shot an 88.

Coach Andrea Wieland said the Red Hawks played better than expected.

"I thought a score of 335 would be good enough to get us through," Wieland said. "As it turned out, we were four shots better than that.

"When I saw the scores at the turn, I thought we were in pretty good shape, but you never know."

Wyss had the lowest round of her career in qualifying for state, shooting 39 on the front and back.

"Taylor had been working hard all year to break 80, so to come out today and save her best for when it meant the most is pretty special," Parker coach Mary Ross said. "She had an incredibly consistent round and made some big putts.

"Overall, I'm really proud of our team and what they've accomplished this season. We broke the school scoring record, and everybody will be back next year.'

Micayla Richards had 90 for Parker, Lindsey Ahrens 98 and Kailey McDade a 101.

Hayley Arneson and Ashley Hermann's of Janesville Craig shot 94 and 99, respectively, but failed to qualify for state.

Ferrell, Edgerton qualify in Division 2

Brooke Ferrell is headed back to state for the fourth time, and this time, she's taking her teammates with her.

The Edgerton High senior won the Division 2 Wisconsin Dells Sectional on Monday with an impressive 1-under par 71 on the difficult Trappers Turn Course. Ferrell's teammates played well enough to finish second to perennial powerhouse Madison Edgewood and also earn a berth.

Edgewood had a 333 total, while Edgerton was second at 357. The only other time Edgerton qualified for state as a team was in 2009, Ferrell's freshman year.

"It's awesome," Ferrell said of the team qualifying. "Everybody did their part today to make it happen.

"Erica (Richardson) broke 100 for the first time this year, Lauren had a great 43 on the back nine, and Shelby had real good, consistent round."

Ferrell had three birdies in her round and two bogeys.
