Cougar girls hit from long range for first win
JANESVILLE Janesville Craig took a few minutes to get warmed up Tuesday night, but once the Cougars did, Madison East didn't have much of a chance.
Sophomore guard Alison Hughes scored 22 points to lead the Cougars to a 54-31 victory in a Big Eight Conference girls basketball game.
"It's good to get the first one," Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said.
Hughes made six three-point field goals en route to her game-high 22 points.
"What a way to start," Storbakken said.
The Cougars led by just a point, 10-9, when they started draining three-pointers. Craig finished the half with a 34-6 run that led to a 44-15 halftime lead.
"They stayed in a zone," Storbakken said of the Purgolder defense. "We were missing Nicole Kelly who is one of our inside players. We can go inside or out."
Senior Maddie Phillips added 11 points.
Kelly, a 5-10 junior, will miss at least one more game due to a concussion.
"We had a lot of contributions," Storbakken said. "It was a good way to start, especially on the road."
The Cougars play at Madison West on Friday night.
