— A 15-year-old Williams Bay High School student used a code name to talk about her sexual relationship with former assistant basketball coach Shane McKinley, according to court documents.

Her teammates became suspicious, and at least one girl figured out the “secret boyfriend” was McKinley. The girl alerted authorities, who started an investigation in December, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Walworth County prosecutors Friday charged McKinley, 27, previously of 130 Autumn Drive, Delavan, with repeated sexual assault of a child and five counts of possession of child pornography, according to online court records.

In court Friday, McKinley gave an address of 1381 Prestwick Drive, Lake Geneva.

McKinley was released Jan. 6 from Walworth County Jail after posting a $10,000 cash bond, according to jail records.

The girl, who turned 16 last fall, in December told a Walworth County social worker that she had sexual contact with McKinley in December 2010 at the YMCA in Lake Geneva and had sex with McKinley in his Delavan apartment on many occasions between December 2010 and summer 2011. He took photos of her naked, the girl said.

The investigation started Dec. 15 when school officials received reports that McKinley had sent “inappropriate” text messages to players, Williams Bay Superintendent Dr. Vance A. Dalzin has said.

McKinley was fired, and school officials immediately contacted the police, he said.

McKinley was a volunteer coach last year and became a Williams Bay High School staff member this year. He also worked at the Lake Geneva YMCA.

A Delavan Police Department detective interviewed several juveniles about the girl’s suspected relationship with McKinley. One friend said the girl met an older man she called “Shawn” at the Lake Geneva YMCA. The girl’s description of her boyfriend’s age was between 18 and 24, according to court documents.

The girl told her friend she and “Shawn” were going to get married.

The girl’s teammates started getting suspicious when McKinley and the girl exchanged flirtatious looks during practice.

On one occasion, McKinley shut the equipment room door while taping the girl’s finger.

At least one teammate thought it was weird that the girl couldn’t show her friends any pictures of her boyfriend.

In December, the friend saw “Shawn’s” phone number on the girl’s cell phone and confirmed it was McKinley’s. She couldn’t breathe when she saw that the numbers matched, she said.

She told the head coach and her parents, according to court documents.

Police executed a search warrant at McKinley’s home Dec. 21 and reported finding naked pictures of the girl on computer memory cards, according to the criminal complaint.

McKinley’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1.
