— Officials of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin and Dean Health System are talking about how they can further cement their relationship.

SSM is a St. Louis-based provider that owns several hospitals nationwide, including St. Mary's in Janesville and Madison and St. Clare in Baraboo.

Dean, one of the largest integrated health care delivery systems in the country, is a longtime partner of St. Mary's, a subsidiary of SSM Health Care.

Dean is now 95 percent physician owned and provides medical and health services through a network of Dean or St. Mary's/Dean-owned clinics in southern Wisconsin, including Janesville. It also offers health insurance services through Dean Health Plan and clinical research and education through Dean Foundation.

SSM owns the remaining 5 percent of Dean, and it owns about half of Dean Health Plan.

Steve Van Dinter, SSM's regional director of media relations, said that while discussions are preliminary, several options are on the table.

They include the possible merger of Dean and SSM or the acquisition of all or part of Dean by SSM.

"It will likely be fall before we know definitively which of the options is best for both organizations," he said in a news release. "However, our goal is for a decision to be reached within a year."

Van Dinter said the staffs of both organizations are aware of the talks.

The goal, he said, is to investigate how the two providers can better work together to serve patients in the changing face of health care.

"We are enthusiastic about the possibilities this new level of collaboration could bring for our patients and for our organizations," he said. "It is our mutual belief that it will enable us to deliver even better and more cost-effective care to those who depend on us.

"No matter what the outcome is from these collaboration discussions, one fact remains: We remain committed to our partnership, which has served our region well for 100 years."

SSM Health Care of Wisconsin serves an 18-county area in south-central Wisconsin, owning and operating St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, and their two respective nursing homes along with St. Mary's Janesville Hospital. It also is affiliated with Columbus Community Hospital, Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville, Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, Stoughton Hospital and Boscobel Area Health Care.

Dean Clinic is a multi-specialty health care delivery system based in Madison, serving south-central Wisconsin. The Dean organization includes approximately 720 providers who provide primary, specialty and tertiary care at almost 60 locations throughout southern Wisconsin.
