— Janesville Parker’s boys basketball team has been resilient all season long.

The Vikings seem to bounce back from every loss with an impressive win.

That was the case Tuesday night as Parker clipped Madison West, 54-45, in a Big Eight Conference game.

Parker (6-11, 4-9), coming off a disappointing home loss to Madison East on Saturday night, made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter in pulling away.

“I thought we played very well down the stretch,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “It was a very physical game, and when they were forced to foul us, we made our free throws.

“We did a nice job executing our offense most of the game, and defensively, we did a great job denying them any good looks.”

Parker led by two after three quarters before pushing the lead to six on Charlie Grafft’s putback basket with 2:30 left. Senior guard Andrew Somerville made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth for Parker and finished 14 of 16 at the foul line.

Somerville led the Vikings with 21 points, and Decker Thompson and Erik Albeck added 11 points each. Thompson and Somerville hit back-to-back-to-back three-point shots in the third quarter to erase a seven-point West lead.

“I like the way we reacted tonight down the stretch after struggling in the fourth against East,” Masterson said. “This was a big win for us because West beat us the first time we played them at our place.”

Parker hosts second-ranked and defending state champion Madison Memorial on Tuesday night.
