A crew works renovating the former Blockbuster Video buildings on West Court Street in Janesville into a new location for Anytime Fitness. The business is moving from a nearby mini-mall location where it has been located for the last five years.
What it is: Anytime Fitness, one of the world's largest 24-hour gym and co-ed fitness center chains, is changing locations on Janesville's west side.
Owner Jeff Brewer opened his first Anytime Fitness in Janesville five years ago at 2313 W. Court Street. Now, he's renovating a larger building across the street and plans to open in the new location between Christmas and New Year's.
The new location will be at 2315 W. Court St., the former home of Blockbuster Video. The building has been empty since Blockbuster closed in 2010.
"The new location will be much bigger than what I have now," Brewer said. "We'll get our own building on Court Street and much better visibility.
"Plus with the added space, we'll be able to offer more amenities and group exercise classes."
In the new building, Brewer will lease 6,500 square feet of space, compared with the 4,000 he had been leasing.
Brewer said the Anytime Fitness corporation mandates building updates every five years. Since he's now in the fifth year of owning the west side franchise, he needed to upgrade the facility's look, and the added space and visibility is a plus.
Brewer also owns Anytime Fitness on Milton Avenue in Janesville.
He's two years into ownership of that franchise, and he said he'd likely make similar changes to that center in another three years.
