Prescribed burn scheduled for Peterkin Pond in Bloomfield
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wildlife management crews plan to conduct a prescribed burn of roughly 130 acres of mostly marsh and grass at the Peterkin Pond habitat area in Bloomfield Township, Walworth County, weather permitting, on December 13. Anticipated start time is noon.
Controlled or prescribed burning is an ecological and economical method of limiting exotic and unwanted brush invasions that crowd out native vegetation.
According to the DNR, controlled burn also stimulates growth of prairie grasses and native vegetation that improves the habitat for game and waterfowl.
