— Dylan Hoskins hit a home run in the top of the ninth inning to help Janesville Craig edge host Madison East, 4-3, in a Big Eight Conference game Thursday.

“It was a line drive to left,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said of Hoskins’ hit. “It didn’t get very high, and we weren’t sure it would clear, but it went in over the hole in the fence.

“It was a big win for us.”

The victory improves Craig to 8-1 in the Big Eight and 10-2 overall.

“We were coming off a big game with Parker (on Tuesday), and we had a tough one tonight,” Herbst said.

Craig took a 2-0 lead in the first. Riley Quinn hit a double and scored on Brandon Hughes’ triple. Hughes scored on a wild pitch.

East scored a run in the third and took the lead with a two-run fifth.

The Cougars came back to tie it in the sixth. Quinn walked, was sacrificed to second by Hughes and eventually scored on a groundout by Nick Blomgren.

Hughes pitched the first six innings. Blomgren came on and pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.

Blomgren did not allow a hit and walked two. The first walk was erased on a double play, and Blomgren struck out the next two batters after walking a hitter in the eighth.

“We didn’t play our best game, but we got the win,” Herbst said.

The Cougars, who remain a half-game behind Sun Prairie for first place in the Big Eight, play in the Beaver Dam tournament Saturday. Craig plays Beaver Dam at 10 a.m. and Waunakee at 3 p.m.
