Marquette surges past UW

— Wisconsin couldn’t hold on down the stretch and suffered a 55-52 loss to Marquette in nonconference women’s college basketball Tuesday at the McGuire Center.

Sophomore Morgan Paige scored two of her career-high 16 points to put the Badgers up, 49-46, with 2:37 left to play. The Golden Eagles (2-0) pulled within, 49-48, at 2:10 off a layup from Gabe Minx, and Katherine Polouff sank two free throws to give Marquette a 50-49 lead with 1:45 to go.


Sabrina Simmons, who finished with a game-high 23 points, scored a layup with 46 seconds to play, giving Marquette a 52-49 lead. The Badgers (1-2) turned the ball over and missed a three-pointer with five seconds left, giving the Golden Eagles the ball back. Simmons added two free throws while Wisconsin’s Jade Davis added a three-pointer as time ran out for the final outcome.
