— UW-Whitewater used four hits to skip past the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.), 3-2, here Wednesday in an NCAA Division III regional baseball opener.

Whitewater (33-11) plays Hamline University (29-13) at 4 p.m. today in the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

Matt Beyer, a Janesville Parker High School graduate, hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeff Donovan with the lead run in the sixth inning. Donovan doubled to open the inning.

The Tommies put runners on the corners in the seventh with one out, but Whitewater reliever Riley Tincher coaxed a double play to end the threat.

In the eighth, St. Thomas opened with back-to-back singles, but Whitewater reliever Eric Schmitz worked out of the jam, getting an out at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt and the next two Tommies to fly out.

The Warhawks managed only four hits off freshman pitchers Zach Franz and Mark Ulrich, scoring on Rob Coe’s single in the first and Dylan Friend’s infield single to drive in Beyer and tie the game 2-2 in the fourth.

Tincher (10-4) allowed one run on four hits through four innings for the victory. Coe pitched a perfect ninth to notch the save.

Donovan pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits. Donovan walked one and posted five strikeouts.

St. Thomas notched eight hits, including a sole home run. The Tommies struck out nine times and left seven runners on base, including four in scoring position.
