Last-inning threats came up short Sunday for the Albion Tigers and Evansville Jays in the Southeast Section of Home Talent League baseball.

Albion left the tying and lead runs on second and third base in its last at-bat and suffered a 5-4 loss at Stoughton, while Evansville had the tying run cut down at the plate in ending a 3-2 loss to visiting McFarland.

The Tigers rallied from a 5-1 deficit with a three-run ninth inning against Stoughton. Josh Eastman led off with a solo home run. Ethan Vaade then reached base an error, and Jim Eastman and Adam Gregory followed with singles.

An error on Gregory’s hit enabled two runs to score and left runners on second and third with nobody out. Albion then pulled within 5-4 when a run scored on Marty Johnson’s infield out, but after a change of Stoughton pitchers, a strikeout and pop-up ended the game.

Albion had taken an early 1-0 lead on Jesse Appel’s leadoff double and Josh Eastman’s RBI single in the first. Stoughton tied it in the third and went ahead for good in a three-run sixth that included five hits and RBIs by Dan Campbell, Brett Klitzke and Tanner Klitzke.

Stoughton finished with 17 hits, including 16 singles, as the Merchants improved to 2-0 in the West Division and dropped the Tigers to 1-1.

-- McFarland 3, Evansville 2—McFarland overcame a 2-1 deficit in the top of the ninth, then held off the Jays in their final at-bat.

Brian Brickson drew a walk off a full count with the bases loaded to force in McFarland’s tying run. Dave Ellefson hit into a fielder’s choice to score Mike Benters with what proved to be the winning run.

Evansville took its 2-1 lead on Eric Seeman’s RBI single in the eighth, but the Jays came up short in the ninth when Michael Crider was thrown out at the plate in attempt to make it 3-3.

That dropped the Jays to 0-2 in the West Division, while McFarland improved to 1-1.

-- Utica 7, Orfordville 3—Utica’s defending West Division champions (2-0) broke away from a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning of a Saturday game against the Orioles at Beloit.

Winning pitcher Kyles Bates went 4-for-4 in leading Utica’s 13-hit attack.

Orfordville had RBI singles by Ty Martin and Pat Moore in taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Moore’s RBI single lifted the Orioles into a 3-3 tie in the sixth.

Moore, Brandon Smith, Joe Cox and Ryan Schmitz each had two hits for Orfordville, which fell to 0-2 in the West.

-- Fort Atkinson 7, Whitewater 2—Brandon Deuster and Tom Dehnert each drove in two runs in leading Fort Atkinson’s defending East champions (2-0) past the Swingers (1-1).

Nick Raether had three of Whitewater’s six hits.

-- Jefferson 12, Cambridge 4—After throwing a no-hitter a week ago, Tom Klug pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead Jefferson (2-0) past Cambridge

(0-2) in the East Division.

Bowe Bushey drove in three runs, including a two-run double, to lead Jefferson’s 10-hit attack.

-- Lake Mills 9, Deerfield 7—Keith McFarlane went 4-for-6, and Lake Mills (1-1) withstood Deerfield’s four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth for an East Division win.
