Doubles pave way for Janesville Craig win
Sparked by victories from all three doubles teams, the Cougars upended cross-town rival Janesville Parker, 5-2, in a Big Eight Conference dual at Palmer Park.
Craig High (3-3 in the Big Eight) was playing its fourth match of the week.
“This was our third different lineup this week, and I was really happy with the way the guys responded tonight,” Craig coach Justin Long said. “Sam de Poutiloff moved up to No. 2 singles and played a great match. That was a big win for us. As was Ross Sroda’s first varsity win at No. 4 singles.
“I thought our experience in doubles would be the difference, and as it turns out, it was.”
Mo McCrone and Stewart Winter won at No. 1 doubles for the Cougars, Zack Hardin and Cody Lipetri at No. 2, and Matt Hayden and Joe Worple at No. 3.
Parker (0-5) got wins from Matt Knutson at No. 1 and Ryan Ploof at No. 3 singles, respectively.
“Our doubles play is getting better each and every night, but we just didn’t have the experience that Craig did,” Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said.
“I tip my hat to Craig. They made a couple lineup changes, and those kids really stepped up.”
Parker hosts Lake Geneva Badger, Beloit Memorial and Fort Atkinson in a quadrangular today. The Vikings also are in the Stoughton Invitational on Saturday. Craig plays at the Watertown Quadrangular today.
