Janesville Parker came into the week knowing good performances against Sun Prairie and Middleton would put it right in the thick of the Big Eight Conference baseball race.

The results were not want the Vikings wanted.

After losing to league-leading Sun Prairie on Monday, the Vikings lost at Middleton, 8-4, Tuesday.

The losses left the Vikings at 5-4 in the conference, while four-time defending champion Middleton improved to 5-3.

“It’s disappointing,” said Parker coach Brian Martin. “We had a chance in our big games and didn’t get it done. Now we have to get back on the horse and hope for some help.”

Only four of the Cardinals’ eight runs were earned because of five Parker errors.

A three-run homer in the fourth led to an 8-0 lead.

Trent Kobs had an RBI double, Taran Kobs had an RBI groundout and Connor Long had an RBI single for the Vikings.

Parker, 7-4 overall, plays Libertyville, Ill., at 4 p.m. Thursday at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The Vikings return to Big Eight action with a doubleheader Saturday at Madison East.

-- Verona 17, Craig 2—Poor fielding continues to plague Janesville Craig.

The Cougars committed nine errors that led to 10 unearned Verona runs and a lopsided loss to the second-place Wildcats in a Big Eight game at Riverside Park.

Sophomore Brandon Hughes allowed five hits in six innings for the Cougars, but the porous defense allowed seven unearned Verona runs.

The Wildcats turned a 3-2 game into the final result with four runs in the fifth and 10 in the seventh.

“Until our infield can figure out how to throw and catch the ball, we’re going to struggle,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “We were right there at 3-2. Brandon Hughes pitched about as good of a game as we had all year, but he got no support.”

The Cougars take on Beloit in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside.
