— The National Guard Armory in Elkhorn has been under heightened security following the announcement Sunday that the U.S. military had killed Osama bin Laden.

Army National Guard officials Monday morning requested assistance from the Elkhorn Police Department to provide extra patrols around the Armory for the next few days, according to a police department report.

Officers were asked to be on the alert for vehicles parked closer than 25 feet to the building, or to report any packages left at the building.

Despite concerns from military officials in Washington D.C. of the possibility of retaliatory raids, there have been no significant incidents in the three days following bin Laden's killing.

The State Department Monday issued a worldwide advisory to U.S. citizens traveling and living abroad about the potential for anti-American violence.

“Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations,” the advisory said.

U.S. government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert, the State Department said, and some may temporarily close or suspend public services when necessary.

Americans abroad are urged to keep an eye on media coverage of local events and to maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, the advisory said.
