Delavan-Darien stuns No. 3 seed Union Grove, other scores

Delavan-Darien High earn-ed only two victories during the boys basketball regular season, but found tournament play more fun Tuesday night.


Marcus McLin scored 29 points, while Justin Fowlkes and Justin Held added 18 and 16, respectively, as the No. 6-seeded Comets upset No. 3-seed Union Grove, 72-59, in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal.


The Comets (3-20) play at Elkhorn (11-11) on Friday in a regional semifinal.


Coach Bob Beighton said the Comets played their best game of the season to beat the Broncos (13-10). McLin had 14 points in the first half and 15 in the second.


With Union Grove concentrating on McLin and Fowlkes, Held scored 14 of his season-high 16 points in the second half.


The Comets led, 38-29, at halftime, and 50-44 going into the final quarter. The Comets made 13 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Broncos.


Cody McClelland led Union Grove with 16 points.

Sexton finished with 12 points. Teammates Dan Kempema and Jimmy Hanson scored 11 points apiece.

Tyler Wedel scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half for the Spartans. Adam Schulter chipped in 12.


Jacob Nachtigal scored 18 points for Reedsburg (11-12). Chad Mazur added 17 points and Ryan Pawlisch chipped in 12 points.
