Burns' FTs key Turner victory, other scores

Sam Burns scored only two points in the game, but they were the ones Beloit Turner needed the most Tuesday night.


Burns hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give the Trojans a 53-51 win over visiting Orfordville Parkview in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal.


Turner (12-11) plays at Brodhead (13-9) on Friday in the regional semifinals that pairs into the lower bracket of the Middleton Sectional.


Parkview’s Kyle Woodworth had 21 points for game scoring honors. Teammate Larry Kyser added 12 points, but the Vikings’ season ended at 1-20.


Turner’s Travis Appleby scored all 17 of his points in the first half. Tevien Pinckney added 13 points for the Trojans.

-- Evansville 64, Marshall 60—Evansville overcame nine Marshall three-point goals to hold off the Cardinals in a Division 3 regional quarterfinal on the Blue Devils’ court.


Adam Stamm scored a career-high 27 points as the Blue Devils (13-10) advaced to a regional semifinal Friday night against Lakeside Lutheran (21-1) at Lake Mills. The winner plays Poynette or Lake Mills on Saturday at McFarland in a regional semifinal that pairs into the Middleton Sectional.


All 27 of Stamm’s points against Marshall came in the final three quarters, when Evansville scored 46. Dylan Erickson scored 16 points for Evansville, while Casey Moseley added 13, but Marshall still made it tough for the Blue Devils.


The Cardinals tied the score at 51-51 with 4:13 to go, but Evansville made five of six free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.


Freshman guard Cameron Ward led Marshall (10-13) with 25 points, including four three-pointers. Junior Ethan Janke added 13, including three three-pointers.

-- Edgerton 43, Big Foot 34—An 11-6 advantage in the third quarter carried the host Crimson Tide to the Division 3 regional quarterfinal win over visiting Walworth Big Foot.


Edgerton (11-12) plays at Rock Valley South champion Clinton (19-3) on Friday night. The winner faces Turner or Brodhead on Saturday at Big Foot in a regional final that leads to the Middleton Sectional.


The Crimson Tide led 19-17 at half, then but pushed the advantage to seven in the third quarter.


Edgerton made nine of 11 free throws in the fourth to preserve the victory.


Tyler Oren and Tyler Dobratz had 14 and 13 points, respectivley, to lead Edgerton. Kenneth Walker had 11 points to lead Big Foot (5-18).

Lurquin had a season-high point total as the Pumas


(14-9) took an 8-0 lead, then opened the second half with a 10-1 run to open a 40-17 lead.


Senior Matt Vogel led the Eagles (8-15) with nine points.


Poynette plays at Lake Mills (18-4) in a regional semifinal game Friday night.

-- University School 65, Palmyra-Eagle 48—Four double-figure scorers led Milwaukee University School past visiting Palmyra-Eagle in a Division 3 regional quarterfinal game.


The Wildcats (5-18) earned a shot at Rock Valley North champion East Troy (21-1), the state’s second-ranked Division 3 team, in a regional semifinal game Friday night on the Trojans’ court. The winner plays Racine St. Catherine’s (20-3) or Milwaukee Northwest (12-10) on Saturday at Waterford in a regional final that leads to the Al McGuire Center Sectional.


University School pulled away from an 12-8 edge over Palmyra-Eagle (6-17) with a 40-22 advantage in the two middle quarters.


Gregory Booth led University School with 15 points.. Kevin McGivern had a game-high 16 for the Panthers.
