BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A home in the German Camp subdivision of Genoa City was destroyed Wednesday by fire.

Nearly a dozen firefighters battled the stubborn blaze that took more than an hour to extinguish.

A neighbor said the home was vacant at the time the fire broke out in the area off County Highway H north of Genoa City that is populated with vacation homes.

The first departments were called about 11 a.m., followed by two more calls for assistance.

Among the crews that responded were Bloomfield-Genoa City, Harvard, Lyons, Town of Burlington, Whitewater, Silver Lake, Salem, Hebron, Richmond, Elkhorn and Lake Geneva. The Racine Bells also are assisting.

Ambulances stood by on Highway H while tanker trucks hauled water to the site.

Traffic was backed up on Highway H, and police responded to a two-vehicle accident as cars were moving through the area.
