Wood's shutout streak broken, but Wilmot advances to state softball title
Wood held Bradford scoreless for five innings Friday, and the Panthers held on for a 4-3 victory in the second Division 1 semifinal game at Goodman Diamond.
Seven-time state champion Stevens Point, coached by Walworth Big Foot High School graduate Tom Drohner, began the evening with Kelly Franks’ two-hit pitching in a 2-0, nine-win over Chippewa Falls.
So the two sets of Panthers—Wilmot (25-1) from the Southern Lakes Conference and Stevens Point (26-1) from the Wisconsin Valley—are scheduled to clash at 5:30 p.m. here today in the final game of the three-day, four-division tournament.
Stevens Point will be aiming for its sixth championship since 2001, all under Drohner. Wilmot will be going for its first in Division 1 after taking the Class B title in 1990.
Bradford’s three-run sixth inning ended Wood’s bid for a 16th straight shutout. It was first time anybody scored on Wilmot since Westosha Central handed the Panthers their only loss, 3-0, on May 3.
The Red Devils (26-3) got five hits off Wood, a junior righthander, who had pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the quarterfinals and a two-hitter in the sectional finals. Cayla Schlevensky’s RBI single with two outs, one of Bradford’s three hits in the sixth, broke the shutout string. The other two runs were unearned after dropped fly ball.
Wilmot built a 4-0 lead with two-run rallies in the fourth and sixth. Ashley Webster and Karli Dorn had two-out RBIs in the fourth, giving the Panthers the lead for good.
Stevens Point got three straight hits with two outs in the ninth to break a scoreless tie against Chippewa Falls (24-3). Nicole Nelson drove in the only run the Panthers needed.
