— Maybe it was the long layoff.

Or the unfamiliarity of playing at the UW Field House

Whatever it was, nothing seemed to go right for the girls Division 1 South all-stars at Friday morning’s Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association game.

The North all-stars, led by a dominating front line, cruised to a 59-37 win.

The South squad, which included Janesville Craig’s Amanda Hamilton and Janesville Parker’s Danielle Flood, could not recover from a horrendous first half. The North led 28-14 at half, as the South misfired on 30 of 33 shots the first 20 minutes. A three-point second quarter sealed the South’s fate.

“This week was a lot of fun, but the game wasn’t fun for any of us,” Hamilton said. “I thought we were going to come out hot because we were hot in warmups, but it seemed like we were short on almost every shot.

“We had a great week practicing, and I really thought we were going to come out and play well. It just didn’t work out for us today.”

Size made the difference for the North. Glendale Nicolet’s Alex Cohen, a 6-foot-5 Northwestern University recruit, and Pulaski’s 6-1 Brooke Lauritzen had their way underneath. Lauritzen finished with a game-high 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, while Cohen had nine rebounds, eight points and four blocks.

The South’s Samantha Logic, a University of Iowa recruit and the most talented player on the court, was held to nine points on 2-of-12 shooting.

Flood and Hamilton failed to score, but Hamilton had an assist and a steal, while Flood had three steals and a block.

“It was a frustrating day,” Flood said. “Everything was in and out.

“We wanted to push the ball as much as we could, but they did a great job getting back on defense.

“But it was still a great week and a great experience.”
