— Alana Cesarz’s best wasn’t quite good enough here Friday.

The Delavan-Darien High School graduate and University of Nevada Las-Vegas recruit had a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds, but her Division 2 South all-star team fell 65-64 to the North team at the WBCA Classic at the UW Field House.

Jenna Anderson’s three-point basket with 1:06 left put the North ahead for good at 64-62. Cesarz blocked a shot with 27 seconds left to give the South one final shot, but an off-balance jumper by Monroe’s Kyleigh Sellnow at the buzzer came up short.

South coach Mike Syzdowski had designed the final play to go to Cesarz, but the 6-foot-2 center could not get loose from double coverage.

“We made some dumb errors at the end, but I still thought we had a chance to win,” Cesarz said. “I was supposed to pop out for the shot on the last play, but Klyleigh got cut off and couldn’t get me the ball.”

Cesarz twice gave the South a five-point lead in the fourth quarter. Her three-point play pushed the South lead to 58-53 with 7:35 left, and her two free throws with 2:55 left gave the South a 62-57 lead.

Milton’s Liz Eide scored six points for the South in the first half but was held scoreless in the second half. The 6-2 Eide said the physical play suited her style. The South played the first 15 minutes of the second half without committing a foul.

“It was very physical, but that’s the way I like to play,” Eide said. “It would’ve been a lot better to end with a win, but it was still a great week and something I’ll never forget.”

Eide led the South with nine rebounds and also added a block. Cesarz had a game-high four blocks to go along with two steals and two assists.

Janelle VandenPlas of Luxemburg-Casco led the North with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Sparta’s Anderson added 12 points for the winners.

Madison Edgewood’s Mackenzie Reece played the first half and scored three points. Reece plays for the Edgewood soccer team and left with her parents at halftime to travel to Milwaukee for Edgewood’s WIAA Division 2 state semifinal game against Waukesha Catholic Memorial.
