Wood continues to shine at state softball semifinals
Typical of her spectacular career, Wood fired a no-hitter against Oconomowoc as the Panthers advanced to the WIAA Division 1 state semfinals with a 10-0 victory that took only five innings at Goodman Diamond.
The Panthers (24-1) play Kenosha Bradford (25-2) in the semifinals at 8 tonight.
Wood's latest effort produced her 15th straight shutout and the eighth no-hitter in state tournament history. She pitched a one-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Badger South champion Fort Atkinson last week for the sectional title, and the Panthers have not been scored upon since May 3 in a 3-0 loss to Westosha Central.
Oconomowoc's only base-runner against Wood came when losing pitcher Delaney Osterday, the game's second batter, was safe on an error. Wood, a junior righthander, retired the last 14 batters, struck out the side three times and finished with 12 strikeouts.
Wilmot had 11 straight batters reach base in a nine-run fourth inning that put the game out of reach. Wood, Kelli Hutchinson, Kelsey Saucerman and Sarah Vozel each had two of the Panthers' 11 hits.
Wilmot, which has won three straight Southern Lakes Conference championships, is making its eighth appearance in the state tournament and looking for its first state title. The Panthers and Wood lost 1-0 to Mequon Homestead in last year's quarterfinals.

Monroe High School's return to the WIAA state softball tournament had an abrupt ending Thursday night.
The Cheesemakers, who knocked out top-ranked Edgerton in the sectional finals to gain their first state berth since 2009, dropped a 10-0 decision to unbeaten Baldwin-Woodville (26-0) in the Division 2 semifinals at Goodman Diamond.
Two doubles and a single sparked a four-run second inning that put Baldwin-Woodville in control at 5-0. The Blackhawks collected 11 hits overall against Becca Armstrong.
Abby Klopp limited Monroe (17-11) to three singles, and only one Cheesemaker got beyond second base. Klopp had 11 strikeouts and allowed no walks.
