Turner High was two-thirds of the way from getting out of the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

Edgerton made the final one-third too difficult to accomplish.

The Crimson Tide scored five runs after two were out in the first inning and went on to defeat the Trojans, 7-3, in a WIAA Division 2 softball regional final Thursday at Edgerton.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide (21-2) advances to the Evansville Sectional and plays Madison Edgewood in a semfinal game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitewater.

The Trojans opened the regional title game by scoring on Cooki Casey’s two-run triple that fell inches in fair territory down the right-field line.

Turner pitcher Megan Zandler retired the first two Edgerton hitters in the bottom of the inning.

Then the Crimson Tide went to work. Meggie Schmidt started the rally with a double. Anne Tronnes walked, Emily Zeimet got an RBI single, and Tia Cleveland reached on an error that scored Tronnes.

Olivea Zeimet then smacked a two-run double, and Monica Richardson completed the outburst with an RBI double.

“The middle of our order really came through,” said Edgerton coach Tony DeWar. “That put (Turner) down a little bit. I thought we would be able to put them away, but we weren’t able to do much after that.”

Cleveland earned the victory with a six-hitter.

Waterford (15-7) plays at top-seeded Wilmot on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Janesville Craig Sectional.

Waterford loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but it looked like Milton starter Jessi Duoss would get out of the jam after a fielder’s choice force at the plate and a short flyout to left.

But the error on the throw on a grounder proved to be the difference.

The two runs came after Milton had a runner on third with one out in the top of the fourth.

“We couldn’t get it done,” Milton coach Mindy Bilhorn said. “We had too many strikeouts. I thought our girls could hit (Waterford starter Maddie Szalewski), but we didn’t do it.”

The Red Hawks finished 15-9.
