— Sue Morton has directed the revamped Lake Geneva farmers market for nearly 12 years, a venture that usually draws about 30 vendors to Horticultural Hall every Thursday from May through October, with booths inside and outside the historical downtown location.

Morton said the hall is an ideal spot for the market, and it holds sentimental value for her.

“I remember as a young kid, and I’ve been around a long time, helping my mom with flowers and everything during garden club events and when they held activities for Holiday Home Camp,” Morton said. “It’s a historic building that was done by a wonderful architect. It’s simply done, but it’s a fantastic, beautiful place.”

Built in 1911, the hall’s roots go back to the 1870s and 1880s. Landowners and summer residents enlisted their gardeners and estate foremen to assist in raising money for the support of Holiday Home Camp, a 26-acre facility in Williams Bay that was established by Chicago industrialists and remains one of the oldest accredited camps in the country still operating in its original location.

Horticultural Hall will recognize its 100th anniversary with a host of activities from July 31 through Aug. 7.
