— Janesville Parker’s boys basketball team got back to the basics and back into the win column Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Somerville and Creed Knutson scored 18 points apiece to lead a balanced attack as the Vikings coasted past Madison West, 75-57, in a Big Eight Conference game.

Parker (7-7, 5-6) snapped a four-game losing streak by doing the little things necessary to win. The Vikings played solid defensively, dominated the boards and had five players score in double figures.

“I thought we would play well today, and for the most part, we did,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “I saw some promising things from our team, starting with the fact that a number of different kids stepped up and contributed.

“It was a total team effort on both ends of the court. The balanced scoring is something we have really been focusing on. We can’t really on Creed all the time, and we didn’t have to today.”

Parker had a 10-point lead after the first quarter and was never threatened after that by the young and foul-prone Regents. West (2-11, 2-8) was overly aggressive in trying to get back into the game, committing 22 fouls and sending Parker to the line 30 times.

The Vikings pushed the lead to 23 midway through the fourth quarter as Knutson, the Big Eight’s third-leading scorer, made three three-point shots in the fourth. The 6-foot-5 senior had 11 in the fourth as part of the Vikings’ 22-point outburst.

“We knew West would play hard and play physical,” said Masterson, whose team swept the season series from the Regents, but needed two overtimes to win 59-56 at Madison in December. “We really stressed rebounding and getting the ball inside, and we did a great job of that, especially in the second half.”

Junior guard Decker Thompson sparked the Vikings off the bench with 13 first-half points. Erik Albeck added 12 for Parker and Austin Lloyd added 10.

Parker hosts Verona in a Big Eight game Thursday night.

“We’re hoping to get on a roll again like we did earlier in the season,” Masterson said. “Hopefully, today was a start.”
