— Have you ever wondered what amateur radio was about? Is it still relevant in the age of the Internet? Actually, amateur radio is growing, with more than 700,000 licensed radio amateurs in the United States for the first time.

From noon to 6 p.m., Jan. 8, at the Darien Town Hall, the Lakes Area Amateur Radio Club and the American Radio Relay League present Kid’s Day 2012. Kids of all ages are invited to come out to this free, hands-on event and see for themselves what all the fun is about.

Licensed amateur radio operators will assist anyone who wishes to make on-the-air contact with radio amateurs around the country or around the world.

There will be multiple radios operating, so everyone will have a chance to get some radio time. Free comic books, coloring books and Morse/Standard phonetics sheets available while supplies last.

Those attending will have a chance to make new friends and learn about people from other places around the country and the world. They’ll also learn the importance of amateur radio operators in weather spotting and communications during other natural disasters.

From the personal achievement of making contact using Morse code, to the latest computer driven digital communications modes, there is more to do in amateur radio than ever before.
