La Crosse prevails over Whitewater in OT

— UW-Whitewater lost to UW-La Crosse, 71-68, in overtime Wednesday in WIAC women’s basketball.

Whitewater is 1-1 in the WIAC and 6-2 overall. La Crosse is 1-1 and 6-2 overall.


Whitewater played uphill most the game, trailing 38-22 at the half and falling 15 points off the lead in the second half before rallying to tie it 58-58 in regulation on Katelyn Thill’s two free throws with six seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.


In the extra session, Leah Harms, a Whitewater High School graduate, made one of two free throws, rebounded her miss, was fouled and made one of two free throws to give La Crosse the 71-68 winning margin.


La Crosse made 23 of 38 free throws, while Whitewater made 18 of 23. The Eagles gained a 47-36 advantage in rebounding.


Cortney Kumerow scored 18 points, Mary Merg had 17 and Chantel Burg chipped in 14 for Whitewater.
