— Opening up the conference season against the defending conference champion on the road is one thing.

Doing that against the defending state champion as well as conference champion is just that much more difficult.

That is what Janesville Parker encountered Thursday night. The Vikings went to Madison Memorial and came back with a 79-45 loss to the defending state champion Spartans.

"It was pretty good, but in the third quarter they pulled away," said Parker coach Ryan Masterson. "We started subbing liberally because we have a game (tonight)."

The Vikings, who opened the season with an easy victory against Delavan-Darien, trailed by 10, 32-22, at halftime.

Then the talented Spartans, who were without state championship game hero Brendan Ortiz, pulled away. Memorial outscored Parker, 47-23, in the second half.

Memorial senior Junior Lomomba led the Spartans with 34 points, which included a pair of three-pointers. Lomomba, a Cleveland State recruit, also did damage inside.

"Lomomba is a tough matchup for us," Masterson said. "We went to a zone after we got in some foul trouble, and he was able to penetrate."

Decker Thompson led the Vikings with 12 points, while Andrew Somerville had 11.

"I thought kids played hard," Masterson said. "We'll learn from this. It's a tough place to play, but we didn't back down.

"We have to correct some stuff defensively," Masterson said. "We have to do a better job rebounding, but at times we played pretty evenly. They are an outstanding team, the best team in the state, and we'll use this as a measuring stick."

The Vikings get a chance to do that tonight with a home game against Middleton.
