Boy in custody for having fake grenade
Sgt. Chad Pearson of the Janesville Police Department said the boy was referred to juvenile authorities for possessing an improvised explosive device and unlawful use of a telephone after police found him at home in the 1600 block of Washington Street at about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The boy reportedly had with him a device made to look like a hand grenade. Police and the Dane County Bomb Squad X-rayed the device and determined it to be harmless. Pearson said the device contained no explosive material. Instead, it was filled with drywall nails.
Pearson said Janesville School District officials had alerted police Wednesday of student reports that the boy had threatened to hurt himself and potentially others. The boy reportedly was not at school Wednesday.
The boy remained in custody Thursday, Pearson said.
