— The Janesville Police Department will join other law enforcement agencies across the nation for the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdown on drunken drivers through Monday, Sept. 5.

Janesville police received $35,000 in federal grants in October to be used over a year for extra patrols that allow officers to focus on alcohol-related offenses, Deputy Chief Dan Davis said. The goal is not to increase the amount of tickets issued, police say, but to deter citizens from driving while under the influence and to help prevent alcohol-related deaths.

The Janesville Police Department typically adds four extra squads for the increased drunken-driver patrols throughout the year, Davis said.

Last year in Wisconsin, 220 people were killed and more than 3,500 injured in nearly 5,800 alcohol-related traffic crashes. More than 40,000 convictions for drunken driving were recorded in Wisconsin last year.
