Will Whitewater library open the next chapter?

Being crunched for space has been the norm at Whitewater’s Irvin L. Young Memorial Library pretty much since Director Stacey Lunsford joined the library nearly 10 years ago, she said.
WHITEWATER — The Irvin L. Young Memorial Library has served the community since the summer of 1991. But like its nearby predecessor — the White Memorial Library, which opened in 1904 — the facility located at 431 W. Center St. doesn’t offer nearly enough space to meet increasing usage and fast-paced technological advances and needs.
The current structure was built for just under $2 million, but discussions about expansion have been going on for most of the last decade. To that end, the library board purchased two adjacent properties on Forest Avenue for $400,000.
The price tag for a proposed two-story addition is $8.1 million, which likely won’t fly in such a sluggish economy and even tighter municipal budgets because of cuts at the state level.
Library officials will discuss those plans, and get feedback from community and area residents, during the next board of trustees meeting, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the library’s community room ... CONTINUED
