— Break-ins at area home construction sites are prompting builders to take extra precautions.

Home sites in Williams Bay, New Berlin and Pewaukee have had electrical wires cut and removed from the walls, according to an e-mailed sent to members of the Lakeland Builders Association.

The copper wire is apparently being scavenged for resale.

Contractors say that thieves appear to be targeting homes under construction and in some cases pose as real estate agents to ask to see the model homes.

Builders are cautioned to confirm that the person who is asking for the lock box code is a valid real estate agent.

The LBA e-mail also encourages members to ask people for their Realtor license number and phone number before revealing the lock box code.

In one instance, according to the e-mail, the stripping was done right after the insulation and drywall phase. Not all wires were cut, so the theft and damage was not readily apparent.
