Verona holds off Janesville Craig
Verona, thanks to home runs from Ben Jennings and David Lund, held on for a 6-4 win in the Big Eight Conference opener for both teams.
Craig High (2-1, 0-1) struck out 11 times and could not overcome two costly errors.
“It came down to not making the plays defensively,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “We should’ve been out of the first inning without giving up a run, and instead, they scored four. And the other home run they got came after we should’ve been out of an inning with a double play.
“Cody (Steed) pitched well enough to win, but we just
didn’t give him enough support. And we didn’t swing the bats as well as we did against Oconomowoc.”
Trailing 4-0, the Cougars cut the lead to one in the third. Jameson Henning drove in the first run with a single, and Tom Yaucher followed with a two-run single. Henning added his third home run of the season with a solo blast in the fifth, but the Cougars went quietly in the sixth and seventh.
“We’ve got to forget about this one,” Herbst said. “We get Sun Prairie on Thursday, and they’re the conference favorite.”
Craig hosts Sun Prairie at
5 p.m. at Riverside Park.
