MILTON -- The Milton School District is now serving breakfast, thanks to a $41,300 state grant used to start programs at three of the district’s eight schools.

Jim Degan, food service director for the district, said the number of students taking advantage of the program has been increasing each day.

Last week, the district served 330 breakfasts at the three schools on Thursday, the largest number of the year to date.

“The important thing is to get the food in kids,” Degan said. “They’re better behaved, ready to go. You see at 7 in the morning when they come in, they’re relatively quiet, but by (the start of school), they’re just full of energy.”

The goal is to expand the program next semester or next year, Degan said.

“We’re planning on going to all schools,” Degan said. “I would think that we could possibly start as early as February or March, but more realistically, (it) would be next year.”
